Who Sings Billy Don't Be A Hero

Billy Don't Be a Hero is a 1974 Pop Song written and composed by two British songwriters, Peter Callander and Mitch Murray, this song was release on January 1974.

The first and original singer of the song Billy Don't Be a Hero is Paper Lace. That was first a UK hit for Paper Lace and then, a few months later, a US hit for Bo Donaldson and The Heywoods.

The song was recorded by Paper Lace after they won the British TV Talent Show, Opportunity Knocks. After this song topped the UK charts, Paper Lace recorded another two UK Top 20 hits, one of which was "The Night Chicago Died," which also reached #1 in America.

This song tells of a man who went to war, even though his fiancé asked him to stay safe. His fiancee received a letter telling him that Billy died as a hero, which is specifically what she asked him not to do.

The song is mentioned as having played on K-Billy's Super Sounds of the '70s Weekend in the film Reservoir Dogs. This song has also been mentioned in the film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. In the first episode of Friends, The Powerpuff Girls, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack and The Justice Friends.

The Doug Anthony Allstars performed a comedic cover of this song, featuring the altered line, "Where did Billy's head go?" in place of "Billy, keep your head low." In the season 4 episode of Dinosaurs, the episode title was referenced, "Earl, Don't Be A Hero."

Billy Don't Be A Hero Lyric

The marching band came down along Main Street
The soldier blues fell in behind
I looked across and there I saw Billy
Waiting to go and join the line

And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancée
From where I stood I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say:

"Billy, don't be a hero
Don't be a fool with your life
Billy, don't be a hero
Come back and make me your wife"

And as Billy started to go, she said
"Keep your pretty head low
Billy, don't be a hero
Come back to me"

The soldier blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle ragin' all around
The sergeant cried "We've gotta hang on, boys
We gotta hold this piece of ground

I need a volunteer to ride out
And bring us back some extra men"
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Forgetting all the words she said

She said: "Billy, don't be a hero
Don't be a fool with your life"
Billy don't be a hero
Come back and make me your wife"

And as Billy started to go, she said
"Keep your pretty head low
Billy, don't be a hero
Come back to me"

I heard his fiancée got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw the letter away
