Duane Dee recorded this song in 1967; His version was a minor country hit, going to #44 on the Billboard Country Chart in early 1968. Over the next few years, many other artists recorded the song, including Linda Martell, Jerry Lee Lewis, Faron Young, Dottie West and Freddy Fender.

However, of all versions, the Freddy Fender version was the most successful, bringing the song to number #1 on the Country and Pop Charts in 1974.

Fender met record producer Huey P. Meaux in 1971 and signed with Crazy Cajun Records. In 1974, Meaux approached Fender about overdubbing vocals for an instrumental track. Fender agreed, performing the song in a bilingual style - singing the first half of the song in English, then repeating that portion in Spanish.

"The recording only took a few minutes," Fender once said that when interviewed. "I was glad to get it over with and I thought that would be the last of it." However, this version immediately took off in popularity when released to country radio in January 1975.

This song went to # 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart in March, spending two weeks atop the chart. Thereafter, the song caught on just as strongly at Top 40 radio stations and it was not long before Fender had a #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit as well. Billboard ranked it as the No. 4 song for 1975

The song was awarded a gold certificate for the sale of 1 million units by the Recording Industry Association of America. In 1975, the song also won the Single of the Year award from the Country Music Association, and was conducive to his also winning that year's Album of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year awards.
