Daydream Believer is a 1967 song written and composed by songwritter and singer John Stewart, he wrote this song shortly before he left Kingston Trio. John Stewart known for his contributions to the American folk music movement of the 1960s while with the Kingston Trio (1961–1967).

After that, Stewart continued to write songs and record for the Capitol, while touring as a solo act. It was during this time that he composed the hit "Daydream Believer" for the Monkees.

In 1971, John Stewart recorded it for his solo album The Lonesome Picker Rides Again as a parody of the Monkees version. In this version many changes were made to the lyrics, one of them is to replacing "daydream believer and a homecoming queen" with "daydream deceiver and an old closet queen."
