Who Sings Brass in Pocket

Brass in Pocket (I'm Special) is a 1979 song written by songwriters Chrissie Hynde and James Honeyman-Scott, and performed by The Pretenders. Most Pretenders songs are written solo by Hynde, but the group's guitarist, James Honeyman-Scott, also contributed to this single.

Who sings the song "Brass in Pocket"

The first and original singer of the song "Brass in Pocket" is The Pretenders. In an interview with the Observer newspaper from December 12, 2004, she revealed that she was initially reluctant to have the song released: "When we recorded the song I wasn't very happy with it and told my producer that he could release it over my dead body, but they eventually persuaded me. So, I remember feeling a bit sheepish when it went to #1."

The song is the band's third single and is their first biggest success, scored number #1 on the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in January 1980, number #2 in Australia and number #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US.

Hynde got the idea for the title song after The Pretenders first-ever UK gig, when they were in the communal dressing room with The Strangeways, who they were supporting. She heard someone asking if anyone had "Picked up dry cleaning? Any brass in pocket?"

When Chrissie asked what was meant by "Brass", someone explained to him that brass was the northern slang term for money.

Chrissie fell in love with the expression and was inspired to write a song about it. The lyrics describe a female singer about her first sexual encounter with a certain person, and express her belief that the experience will succeed.

Brass in Pocket has been covered by Suede for NME's charity compilation Ruby Trax. It also features in its expanded debut album edition which was released in 2018.
