"The Winner Takes It All" was the group's first single after an absence of seven months and peaked at No. #1 in several countries, including the United Kingdom, where it became their eighth-highest charts. It was also the group's final Top Ten Hit in the United States.

This song tells of a divorce where one person does not want to separate and clings desperately the to marriage. Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote this song after separating from his wife, Agnetha. It made Fältskog's in the strange spot of being asked to sing a breakup song written by her ex-husband.

Many people think this song is about their separation. But, Ulvaeus denies the song is about his and Fältskog's divorce. He claims that 90% of this song; "is fictionis the experience of a divorce, but it's fiction. 'Cause one thing I can say is that there wasn't a winner or a loser in our case. A lot of people think it's straight out of reality, but it's not".

That's why he doesn't feel sad when his ex-wife sings it. Said Ulvaeus: "I had this image of a man walking through an empty house with all the furniture removed for the last time as the symbol of divorce and just describing what I see."

Fältskog also repeatedly stated that although "The Winner Takes It All" was his favorite ABBA song and calls this "her biggest favorite" from ABBA's back catalogue, the story was not about him and Ulvaeus: there were no winners in their divorce, especially as children were involved.

In a 1999 poll for Channel Five, "The Winner Takes It All" was voted as Britain's favorite ABBA song. This achievement was replicated in the 2010 poll for ITV. In a 2006 poll for the Channel Five program, it was voted "Britain's Favourite Break-Up Song."

The song was a major success for ABBA, hitting No. #1 in United Kingdom, Belgium, South Africa, the Netherlands, and South Africa. It reached the Top 5 in Finland, Austria, France, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, West Germany and Zimbabwe, while peaking in the Top 10 in Canada, Australia, Spain, Italy, and the United States.

The song was listed as the 23rd most popular single on the US Billboard year-end chart for 1981. This song has been covered by many artists, including Angela Garrison (2013), Big Mes (2017), Jane Lynch and Matthew Morrison performed this on the series finale of Glee in 2015.
